Reduce malaria related mortality and morbidity in the Horn of Africa by providing the evidence base for efficacious malaria treatment policies within the region.

PURPOSE

 

Develop capability to monitor antimalarial drug treatment efficacy as a basis for rational and effective malaria treatment policies in the Horn of Africa (HoA)

 

Establish an environment that enhances cross-border communication and collaboration related to drug efficacy and to better harmonize treatment policies among member countries

 

 

·       Number of sentinel sites in each country operating within HANMAT standards within 12 months

·       Regular (at least annual) intercountry exchanges to develop expertise on issues related to drug resistance and drug policy development

1.    A standardised methodologies for evaluating antimalarial drug treatment efficacy is applied in HANMAT countries

 

 

 

·       Agreement on standard methodologies by the six countries

 

·       At least 90% of results are accurate and follow standard procedures

2.    A fully operational and comprehensive network of sentinel sites with competent personnel for assessing antimalarial treatment efficacy established in HANMAT countries

 

 

·       Sentinel sites producing data are representative of the range of parasite chemosensitivity in each country

·       At least 50% of sites in each country produce results every year

·       Trained sentinel site staff are competent in conduct of tests using the standard methodologies

·       Each member country or member administrative area establishes a database within one year and maintains it throughout the four years

·       Functioning communication channels are established within three months of receipt of funding between the Secretariat, Network Database Centre, and National Teams

·       Secretariat recommendations for policy development and/or therapeutic guidelines are discussed at least every two years at joint partnership meetings including policy makers and other relevant organisations

·       Operational research projects are initiated to improve evidence-based drug policy development

 

·       Reports of inter-country and intra-country meetings

·       Research reports and publications in peer-reviewed journals arising from operational research projects

 

General consensus can be maintained between the Secretariat and policy makers in the HoA

 

Willingness of policy makers & donors to participate in network partnership meetings
